Located in the Maple Leaf neighborhood of Seattle, Fairview Christian School exists to educate and empower children to become healthy, intellectually capable and vital living witnesses to the love, justice and grace of God through Jesus Christ.Fairview Christian’s RainWise installation includes a beautiful rain garden, managing rainwater runoff from a total of nearly 5,400 square feet of roof area. The project

• keeps 100,000 gallons of stormwater out of the combined sewer system every year,
• provides an educational opportunity for students to learn about clean water,
• captures and filters stormwater run-off from the roof,
• protects Puget Sound from combined sewer system overflows.

The project was completed in October 2017, with a total of $18,882.50 covered by the RainWise rebate program.

It took about a year for the project to be completed. Homegrown Organics rented a Bobcat to remove the asphalt covering the proposed site for the rain garden. Volunteers helped removed the debris to quicken the process of converting a part of the playground to a beautiful garden. 5,395 square feet of flat roof area drain into one large raingarden.

In October 2017, the RainWise Program celebrated Fairview Christian School’s commitment to clean water with a  dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. In the photo to the left, Principal Kent David cuts the ribbon to welcome new green infrastructure to the neighborhood. The rain garden provides hands-on learning content and much needed green space for the children of Fairview Christian.

Fairview Christian School urges other schools, neighbors, and community organizations in eligible basins to take advantage of this program. Project partners include church leadership, King County staff, RainWise outreach staff and the creative design talents of the RainWise contractor, Homegrown Organics.
